Look It's Buzz

I wanted to spend a little time on the arts this month because it is a hobby of mine. Art comes into play on the job everyday whether it is preparing presentations, creating new forms, writing the newsletter or blog articles, contemplating changes to the web site or planning a new video. What better way to symbolize art than travel to the imagination of Disney and take a ride on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. My high score is 128,000 by the way. Hope you enjoy.

Documents Attached to Emails?

How often do you need to deal with a document that is attached to an email? We have a number of clients that have this occur many times a day. Many of them print it, scan it and attach it to a transaction in our software often throwing the print out away after scanning. Some wanted more.

For those, we have added the ability to automate the processing of these attachments. We have given them a special email address to use for forwarding these emails with attachments. They forward the email changing nothing but the subject, for that they type the transaction number associated to that document. Not a second after sending this email, the attached documents get split apart from the email and connected to that transaction. A window will then pop-up allowing the user to further mark those documents with a type (selected from a list) and a description if one is required.

Now the document is permanently connected to the transaction and can be used anytime in the future to email, fax, print, include with billing, display on a web tracking screen or merely save for future reference. The document could be a purchase order, permit, photograph, proof of delivery, contract, or any other document that needs saving. Next time you get an email with an attachment, think about how we might help you build a better way to handle it.

What is in a Logo Anyway?

This past weekend using my favorite iPad App SketchClub, I digitally sketched rock columns with an eagle flying above the highest peak. After I was done, I thought it would be a Logo Sketchgreat place for our logo to fly as well. It made me think about logo's in general and what they can mean. So what does your logo say about your company? Interesting question which spurs different ideas in different people. To me, our logo symbolizes a great deal.

Although we have been in business for 30 years, our logo is only a few years old. I guess it took us 25 years to figure out what we stood for. Well, we certainly know that now and our logo has a lot to say.

For example, it is bird like flying, upwards which symbolizes soaring flight and being able to see the forest for the trees. It is sleek which implies that we are quick and be able to maneuver swiftly. If you look closely, you will see three dots, eyes if you will. These represent the three distinct specialties we combine into one company; design, development and support. Our logo also symbolizes movement. That is where we concentrate our resources; movement. It is the movement of people and things that takes up most of our attention. Where is that driver, where is that trailer, where is that carton, we build systems to know the answers to these questions and understand all the necessary components of why, when and how much. So when you look at our logo, I hope you see more now than before. What does your logo say?

By the way, you can see more of my digital sketches on SketchClub. You can also click here to look at other images of TRI.

Why is Sleep So Important?

There is some evidence that sleep is our time for problem solving. Regardless of the arena, emotional, relationship, job or money, sleep will improve your Sleepchances of solving a problem. However, it is REM sleep that allows your brain to ferret out solutions. REM sleep usually kicks in about 90 minutes after you fall asleep.

During REM sleep, your brain kicks into high-gear and begins to multitask. Instead of conscious awareness and focusing on one subject at a time (like we try to do when we are awake), the brain in REM sleep goes into overdrive. It allows random images and thoughts to flow in fleeting bursts of free association. They travel in a bidirectional stream between your left and right brain. When you are awake, it is a one way street. In REM, ideas flow freely left to right, right to left. This is how creativity comes into play in seeking out solutions.

The brain will also concentrate on those problems that have the greatest impact during waking hours in an attempt to resolve your biggest problems. The key to problem solving and creativity is uninterrupted sleep and lots of it. Good luck! You can read more about this in Time Magazines April 23rd issue.

Florida Sunrise

One of my visits to western Florida, I always marveled at the contrast between the sky and the palms. They are beautiful leaves flowing and gentle. They are used to thatch roofs because they are so waterproof when layered. This is the edge of a thatched roof and goes along with the theme of one of the articles this month. Protection of applications is not only found in protecting data but also connectivity.

Murphy's Law

Recently, one of our web applications was thwarted by a Verizon switch gone bad. It occurred on a Friday night and we didn't become aware until Monday morning. The entire weekend was lost because one computer in the cloud could not communicate with another computer at a client site.

Besides the loss in productivity over the weekend, it took more than 2 hours to ferret through the various possible organizations that might have been causing the issue. So even though there is fault tolerant computers, the connection was not fault tolerant. It proves the adage of Murphy's Law, if something can go wrong, it will go wrong.

In the past we monitored our mission critical servers. We have now implemented enterprise wide monitoring looking at every server in our network or our clients network that is providing data remotely or via a web interface. If one of our client's computers goes down, we will know about it. If one of our clients loses Internet, we will know about it. In this world of many cooks in the kitchen, knowing is half the battle. If you would like more information, shoot us an email!

iPad3 - What's All The Hoopla?

So what is all the hype about the iPad 3. Oh my God!!!  Where do I begin? Let's start with the fact that you can't see pixels anymore. With a resolution of 2048x1536, it is far better than many computers with 21" monitors. That's better than most HDTV's! 44% better! Since there are four times more pixels in the same real estate, the picture is truly razor sharp. This isn't just Hype. This is real. It is phenomenal!

It is amazingly sharp. Apple calls this a Retina display which means they claim that it matches what the eye can see. In other words, it looks realistically clear. Well it does. Drawing programs take 4 times as long. If you were painting on a 12" x 12" canvas, your canvas is now 24" x 24". Viewing pictures was great with the iPad2, but much better now. It is really significant!

To go along with the new resolution is a better camera. A 5-megapixle camera takes near perfect pictures and also HD Video! The clarity and detail is really quite excellent. Although it is a bit awkward taking pictures or movies with the iPad, they have made it a bit easier by relocating the shoot button. Next, the iPad3 supports 4g. This might be more noticeable with Verizon service than AT&T because of the abysmal scope of AT&T's 4g network. Although not discussed, I have noticed that the screen is more responsive to my touch than the iPad2. This may be due to the new A5X chip in the iPad3.

Lastly, the iPad3 takes dictation. I have tried it and it is quite good.

Wireless Bandwidth

With the onslaught of iPhones, iPads, smartphones and tablets, wireless bandwidth supplies are being threatened. Just like all our natural resources, the gluttony of our insatiable appetites is beginning to max out available wireless bandwidth. The Congress of the United States has actually taken some action and approved the auctioning of frequencies owned by television stations. Although it is not a requirement for broadcasters to sell their frequencies. But it is an opportunity which many will exercise.

As part of the legislation, the sale of these frequencies will fund the establishment of a public safety network police and fire have been begging for since 9/11. Also in the cards is the development of a Super Wi-Fi network with increased capabilities which will most likely gobbled up by Google and Microsoft.

We may begin to reap the benefits as soon as next year.

TRI has a video

We finally published a video which helps introduce us to you. We have been talking about doing this for a long time because we felt it was an important medium to begin using. It is short and sweet and really covers the TRI Videothings that are most important to us and why we do what we do. You can click on the picture or click here to see the video. We have embedded this video in our web site, but we have also posted it on YouTube and Vimeo.

We plan on doing more videos this year and also plan to begin using video in our blogs. It is just a different way of communicating and we are trying as many ways as we can to convey our message. This video is pretty generic and all about us. In the coming months, we hope to highlight some of the projects we are working on and how our clients get involved in and benefit from creating customized software applications.

This video was produced with the help of Ross Jones of Harvard Video Productions. It is great fun to shoot the video, but the heavy work is really in the post production. This is where experience really helps. There are so many details we would never think about were we to produce our own video. So it was very important to work with a professional. This was a great experience working with Ross.

Apple is Making your Mac look like an iPad

Later this summer, Apple will introduce OS X Mountain Lion for the MacBook and iMac personal computers. For those of you that are iPad users, you will see that Apple is Apple OS X Mountain Lionmoving your personal computer experience towards your iPad experience. Could that be because the iPad is profoundly intuitive? A developer preview was introduced on February 16th and is available now.

Like IOS for the iPad, you will be able to text iPhones from your MacBook or iMac using iMessage - just like the iPad, iPhone or iTouch. All messaging between iDevices will display the entire message stream. You can send video, text or pictures in your iMessage text.

Reminders allows you to keep track of your todo's on all your iDevices because it connects with iCloud. Just like sharing your contacts and calendar between all your iDevices, you can also share reminders. Notes for iPhone and iPad will also be available for the MacBook or iMac and is another iCloud friendly App. And just like the iPhone and iPad, the Notification Center feature of OS X Mountain Lion will allow you to manage how you receive notifications from applications and services.

Integration and sharing are the keywords we will remember from this release. Apple is looking to allow the user to share information, pictures, videos and entertainment by integrating the iTouch, iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook and Apple TV. Personal management and collaboration is better now than ever before.

HDMI, The New Standard Interface

HDMI is the latest in a long line of connector cables. HDMI stands for high definition multimedia interface. You will find Apple iPad HDMIHDMI ports on your new computers, laptops, TV's, projectors, and with this cable, you can connect your iTouch, iPhone or iPad to your wide screen TV or projector. It transmits HD video and audio giving you perfect clarity and sound.

Combine this little cable (about $40) with your iPad and your TV and there is little reason to pay for cable TV or even Tivo. You can obtain streaming video from a number of sources and applications available on your iPad and stream to your HD TV. Apps are available today for Hulu, Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube, TED, Amazon Streaming Video or iTunes. Not to mention the broadcast Apps available like CBS News, PBS, The Daily Show, CNN and more.

Create your own movies with iMovie and watch them on your TV. Link the iPad with a Roku device and it becomes the most powerful remote control you have ever owned. All-in-all, it is a handy cable to own.

Bostons Big Dig

You will find that I am a huge fan of the sun rising or setting. In all my travels, I leave with at least a hundred shots of the sun, the clouds and their dance. It makes the colors of everything change, sometimes the change is surreal, but it is always fantastic. This sun is a Florida springtime sunrise taken over the ocean in Ft. Lauderdale. Might be nice to spend some time there right now. Cheers.

TRIF.COM, Software You Can Mold

That's right. It is a symbol of pure creativity. With PlayDoh, you can create most anything you like. Mold it into any shape, any How PlayDoh is Like trif.comdesign, it is limited to imagination and purpose. TRI software is no different, it can be molded into any shape, any design and it too is only limited by imagination and purpose.

You might want to spend a bit more time planning TRI software than you do playing with PlayDoh, or you may want to sit down with a designer or even a programmer and just begin to create. But the experience can be just as fun and more rewarding!

If your application is unique, it might be very beneficial to create your software specific to your needs rather than pigeon hole your needs to a packaged software solution. It isn't always the best way, but it always produces what you want. It is all part of improving value to your customer or your organization. Better software should correspond to better data, better reporting, faster results, improved training and uniform usage.

If you have questions or would like to play with some trif.com PlayDoh, send an email to playdoh@trif.com and one of our molding professionals will take care of you!

Sync Photos without iTunes via WiFi

If you are like me, you take a lot of pictures with your phone, camera and other devices and often want to combine them on your iPad. PhotoSyncYou usually place your pictures in your iTunes folders so iTunes can see them and when you sync your device, your pictures will update to your device and vice versa. Well that can often be more work than its worth. So usually, I just forget it. The problem also occurs if you have a large video you want to move to your iPad. Without iTunes, it is really difficult. Unless you download an App for $1.99 called PhotoSync. It will work on your iPhone or iPad and it has a free runtime for your PC or your MAC.

Here is the great thing. It really works. I had a 350mb video that I wanted to play on my iPad. I was at the office which is not where I sync my iPad with iTunes. I installed the PhotoSync App and downloaded the runtime on my PC. After I ran the PhotoSync tool on my PC, it created a drop window for me to drop files that I wanted on my iPad. I dropped the 350mb video and within a few minutes, I was viewing the movie on my iPad.

It is a pleasure to use tools that really work. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Social
Link between your Camera and your iPad

Apple has provided a quick and easy way to get pictures from your camera into your iPad (or iPhone) without dumping the images onto your iPad SD card readercomputer and performing an iTunes sync. Just plug this little guy into your iPad and plug your SD Card into it. The iPad will recognize the SD Card immediately and display a light box of all the pictures. You can import them all or click on specific pictures to import selectively. It saves time and is perfect for reviewing your pictures on a great preview screen before you move locations.

For just under $30, you receive two devices, an SD Card reader and a USB connector. So you could connect a memory stick with images on it to your iPad and upload them. In my camera bag, this card reader is a necessity I carry at all times. This is available at your Apple Store, on-line or at Target.

Bostons Big Dig

This picture is all about passion. This month, maybe more than any other, we honor those that are passionate. Whether it is seen in business, art or music. This photo was taken in New Orleans on an extremely foggy morning in Woldenberg Park which runs along the Mississippi River just west of the French Quarter.
This man is so passionate about his music, he is entertaining sometimes himself alone. Passion.

We Make Our Customers More Valuable
to Their Customers

For some time, we have looked closely at what we do, but more importantly we have looked at what our customers get. How they benefit from working with us at TRI. Invariably it comes down to these three benefits: 1) We improve the communications with their customers, 2) We increase the tentacles that connect our customers with their customers and 3) We add value to the relationship between our customer and their customers.

In a nutshell, we make our customers more valuable to their customers.

We look hard to try and find different ways we can enhance the customer relationship for our customers and we work with our customers to look hard as well. Great loyalty can be created when you provide a service that impacts not only your customer, but your customer's customer.  We accomplish that through customized software designed not only with our customer in mind, but their customers in mind as well.  Over the years, the best recommendation we can receive is from our customer's customer.  Accolades from our customers are great, but when they come from our customer's customer, that is awesome!
So think about ways you can service your customer that a customized application might enhance. If you have any questions, please give us a call.

Unsubscribe

Ok, I unsubscribe from emails almost every day. I might accept mass-marketing emails for a while, but then cyclically I go on the rampage and kill everything I can.  The latest is this new fad Groupon which provides local deals not unlike those coupon booklets you receive from your kid's school as a way of earning extra money for your school.  Groupon negotiates discounts and passes the savings along to their customers.  Well, the next time I need an herbal spa treatment, I just may have a peek, but for now, I want the emails to stop.  So I go to the bottom of the email and find the word unsubscribe and click it.  Usually it goes Unsubscribe From Grouponthrough a process of selecting what you are unsubscribing from and why you are unsubscribing, but Groupon does one additional thing.  They apologize and tell you that Derrick is at fault and ask you to click the button to punish Derrick.  So of course I did.  And you can see Derrick get scolded by a superior and then assaulted.  It catches you off guard and makes you think twice about unsubscribing.

How do they do this?  They make it personal.  They make you feel as if someone was harmed as a result of your actions.  And of course, they give you the opportunity to resubscribe.

Thank You Apple!

Apple has helped us a great deal with the release of iCloud in the IOS 5.0 upgrade. Not only can you sync between iCloudiDevices like your iPhone and your iPad, but you can synch between your iDevices and Microsoft Outlook. Google Synch is no longer required. So you can synch Contacts, Calendars, Tasks, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes and even Photos. For those not using Exchange or IMAP email services, you can even synch email.

This is HUGE. Why? Because iCloud is near instantaneous. Google Calendar Sync is a scheduled event. iCloud synch just happens.

For those of us who are PC users, iCloud runs on your PC and is always there. It is an Addin to your Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 software and you will also get an iCloud refresh button in your Outlook menu bar.

It works so well that I have ceased using Google Sync and run iCloud on my iPhone, iPad, home PC, office PC and laptop. So what used to be a painstakingly difficult process to manage properly is now immediate, breathtakingly simple and free (up to 5gb at no charge). Click on the cloud for more information.

Bostons Big Dig

Pictured above is a desert plant found near a city just outside of Las Vegas called Mesquite, Nevada. It is a city built upon a handful of casino's. Although not necessarily a destination in and of itself, it's value is as a comfortable stopping off point for some of America's greatest treasures. Namely; Zion National Park, Dixie National Forest, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Recreation Area and Kaibab National Forest.

Optimisim in the Economy

If we listen to the news, and I am not saying we should, all indications are that optimism in the economy is currently an Truck Tonnageirrational thought.  So what do we do to find the truth?  We don't listen to the news but instead scour our sources for actual signs that our economy is moving and, in fact, moving in a positive direction.  So this month, we look at truck tonnage figures.  If you haven't noticed, truck tonnage figures are up month over month and near 6% ahead of last year.

Given that the largest mode of transportation in the US is trucking and therefore it is one of the leading indicators of a recession. When we see an increase in truck tonnage month-to-month and more importantly, year-to-year, we have reason to be optimistic. Optimistic that we are not heading into a recession and optimism in the fact that the economy is building rather than declining. This isn't just my opinion, it is shared by the ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello.

If we combine that with the increase in rail traffic which is seeing similar growth over last year, we have further reason to believe things are on the mend. Rail traffic has increased 3.3% over last year and a whopping 14% over 2009 levels. Intermodal is up more than 20% over 2009.

We Make Our Customers
More Valuable To Their Customers

There are a few reasons why our clients have come to us for customized software. Sometimes it is the only option available to handle their particular set of circumstances.  Solutions can't always be found in a shrink wrapped package.  More often than not, our clients chose to provide something distinctly special to their customer.  It might be special data reports that summarize information in a special way, it might be web access to certain information that they otherwise could not obtain in real-time, it might be an automated notification or scanned document that serves an important purpose.  Whatever the product created, it generally increases the value our client in the eyes of their customer.

This was the subject of the webinar we gave a few months ago called Sticking to Your Customer. We have many terms for this, sticky, glue, enhanced connection or customer enrichment.  What we really do is make our customers more valuable to their customers.  We help our clients differentiate themselves. As a result, it improves communication and strengthens the bond with their customer.  It can also help bridge gaps in changing personal relationships. Sometimes, it can be used as a bargaining chip to attain better pricing.  In all cases, it helps build and reinforce a lasting relationship.

Learning about your customers' needs is a great place to begin developing a closer, longer lasting connection with your customer.  If you have an idea, please use us as a sounding board.  We will help you put that idea into practice.

Should You Buy A Kindle Fire?

The Kindle Fire is Amazon.com's entre into the tablet world providing not just books, but web, movies, apps, games and more. Steve JobsIt is designed to beat Apple at its own game by providing a less expensive option for multimedia. In fact, It is reported that it costs less than Amazon paid to make it. Read more here. It is predicted by some that the Kindle Fire might become the best selling tablet not created by Apple. The browser capabilities are supported by a browser called Amazon Silk. It is purported to be faster than other browsers by leveraging the power of Amazon AWS (Amazon Web Services). Much of the browsing power is shifted off the tablet to AWS in the cloud.

One of the big stumbling blocks for the Apple iPad is Apple's insistence on avoiding the use of Adobe Flash. Apple has maintained that opening browsers up to Flash is a security risk. Kindle Silk will display Flash. The Kindle Fire will last for 7+ hours of continuous reading or video playback, comes with Wi-Fi, a 7" color monitor, 8gb of storage space. It is less than 1/2 inch thick and weighs less than a pound.

It sounds like a good competitor to the iPad2. In the end, it will come down to the Apps that are made available for the Kindle Fire. But at launch, it is pretty interesting. I'll report back after testing.
