It's News from TRI

As many of you know, I returned from Alaska mid-September. It has taken me this long to try and find the words to describe what I saw, how I felt, and how it has changed me. Above, see for yourself, what appears to be giant blue sapphires are really chunks of glacier ice. Forged over countless millennium and more beautiful than any diamond. I will never forget these jewels, these drifting giants. In total quiet they ride the current until another explosion is heard in the distance echoing throughout the fjord. Another blue gem has been born.

Alaska, Sweet Alaska

This brief article only begins to speak to the grandeur, the unending natural beauty, the seemingly untouched coastline, the Foggygrand scale of Alaska. There are 33,000 miles of coast line in southeast Alaska much of which is untouched. It was a rare gift to have been able to be a momentary visitor.

Our voyage included stops in Skagway, Ketchikan, Juneau, Tracy Arms, Misty Fjords and more. I am hard-pressed to come up with the words to describe the scope and depth of the natural beauty I had the privilege of seeing. With my camera in hand, I attempted to record my experience. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. You can see more of my pictures to Vancouver and Alaska by clicking the photo. I quickly conceded that I would never be able to capture the 360 degree beauty mile after mile, day after day.

It wasn't the exciting things we did, the zip-lining nor the float plane at 6,000 feet. It wasn't even the dozen whales we saw breathing and diving, breathing and diving. It wasn't the island chock full of sea lions for their annual mating season gathering. It was the sheer and utter peace and serenity that seemed to go on forever. Whether we were basking in sunshine or bathed by the dense fog, the beauty was always breathtaking. The quiet. The whisper of nature. It makes me well up. I reconciled myself to knowing the experience would have to live on forever in my mind's eye.

Water. Don't you love rushing water? I head to Alaska tomorrow, I am sure I will see a great deal of water, crisp and clean. I am also confident that I will see much more that is still frozen in glaciers and fjords along the way. Traveling through Tracy Arm to Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau I am completing yet another checkmark on my all too long bucket list. I'll be back in a couple of weeks and I am sure my camera will be chock full of some wonderful memories. In This Issue

Logan Travel

We all know how much it costs to park for a day at Logan. Enough to board 2 dogs and a cat at most any pet hotel. Enough to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at McDonalds. Enough for a T-Mobile unlimited data plan for a month. And if you listen to moneysavingmom.com, enough to eat for a week. We also know what fun it is to try and catch a flight at 9AM never knowing what the traffic will be like at 7AM.

So what is the alternative?

A nifty service available in Boston, along with cities all around the country called parksleepfly.com allows you to book a hotel and arrange for onsite parking free for up to 14-days. Not a bad deal. Here are the gotcha's.

  1. The service costs $42.35
  2. The service does not obtain the best rate from the hotel
  3. The service supposedly communicates the reservation via facsimile/email with all the details. The hotel then needs to enter the reservation manually into their system. If it takes the hotel more than 48 hours to enter the information, they cannot use any confirmation numbers obtained on the credit card.
  4. Your credit card number may be shown on a facsimile in an unsecured environment
  5. Your credit card number may end up on an unsecured desktop
  6. You may lose out on your "Confirmed" reservation.
  7. ParkSleepFly customer service is very quick to blame the hotel for any problems that arise

In the end, you are far better off arranging your reservation and auto-parking with the hotel directly. This is an example of a great idea poorly executed.

Inbound Marketing

You have heard the term and may understand it. But it is a tricky subject. You may want to consider looking at Hubspot for a refreshing look at the possibilities of marketing in a different way. Hubspot is really intelligent marketing software that assists companies in generating leads. They specialize in inbound marketing - the kind of marketing that brings prospects to your door. It works through the use of software built into your website, blog or social media designed to help you identify people that are interested in what you do.

Inbound marketing is based on the concept of not interupting the prospect. Instead you gain permission from the prospect to connect with them on their terms. If a visitor to your web site completes an "I want more information form", they give you permission to connect with them in some way.

The trick is to entice your visitors to sign up for something. How do you do that? It is different for all of us and you may need some help to find the right strategy. It may take an objective look at what you do, how you do it and what your customers think about you. Companies like Leading Results, Inc. and Innovative Marketing Resources can help you find the best way to bring prospects to your door.

DOT Proposes Simplified Paperwork

The DOT reported that U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced a proposal to eliminate a burdensome daily paperwork requirement for professional truck drivers that will reduce costs to the industry by an estimated $1.7 billion annually while still maintaining the Department's high safety standards.

Current federal regulations require commercial truck drivers to conduct pre- and post-trip equipment inspections and file Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) after each inspection, regardless of whether or not an issue requiring repairs is identified. DVIRs are the 19th-highest paperwork burden, based on the number of hours needed to comply, imposed across all federal agencies and only 5 percent of reports filed include defects.

Under the proposed change announced August 1st, commercial truck drivers would continue conducting pre- and post-trip inspections. However, DVIRs would be required only if defects or deficiencies were discovered by or reported to the driver during the day's operations. See more about the proposed rulemaking here.

It's News from TRI

There is something about running water especially in a brook running downhill. This is Scanlon Brook which runs into Still River in Sterling, Massachusetts and eventually falls into Thomas Basin which is the northern tip of the Wachusett Reservoir. The little brook runs strong in spring (when this was taken) and slowly dwindles to a mild trickle at end of summer. Although the volume of water changes with the season, it is always a source of peace and tranquility. In This Issue

Using Outlook Calendars in Operations

Often times we provide software integrated with other applications. Accounting software comes to mind as one of the most often integrated applications. This month, I wanted to mention that we write software that communicates with Microsoft Office and in particular, Microsoft Outlook. Outlook is one of Microsoft's better applications, especially when it is tied to Exchange Online as we have been promoting for some time.

We can integrate our operational software with a shared Outlook calendar. It is a great way to collaborate on real-time events because everyone in your organization can open a shared calendar.

So whether it is to view expected deliveries or review new orders, a calendar is a great visualization tool. Think about how you view events. Appointments, equipment requirements, chassis returns, detention warnings, fulfillment requirements, etc. Having the ability to view these events in a monthly, weekly or daily calendar can be extremely helpful.

But entering this information can be a deal breaker. It is often just too much work. That is where we come in. We integrate your operational software with Outlook. We automatically post an event into a shared calendar based on some criteria that meets your needs. Maybe you need to have more than one calendar, for different types of transactions or different directions. That is no problem. You can have as many shared calender's as you need and we can pass events to each as needed.

So next time you are reviewing your work, consider how it might look cleanly displayed on a calendar.

My Personal Website

For a long time now, I have wanted to create my own personal website. Well, over the last few months, I finally made the time to Windows8do just that. I have created www.robertmckayjones.com so that I could have a place to display the many images I collect in my travels and in my life.

Some people keep a journal or a diary, some have a room where they keep the clay creations they made, some people have a room full of paintings, and others use the web to hold their private collection of whatever they created. That is where you will find the items I create, the photos and the digital sketches.

I have also done some playing around on zazzle.com. This is a site that allows you to create items for sale. Things that you can buy yourself or others can buy. I have created a US Postage Stamp with one of my pictures on it. I have created an iPhone case displaying one of my captured sunsets, a notecard with a black & white sunrise and even a clock with an amber silhouette.

I don't plan on becoming independently wealthy, but I do plan on growing my collection. As I say on my home page, I created it for me, but I hope you like it! If you have a mind to, please send me your feedback.

Synchronizing Computer Files

I have been using Dropbox for personal and business applications for a couple of years and I would say I am a Dropbox DropBoxevangelist. Dropbox allows me to work in sync at the office, at home and in the field. I have 215gb of space available on Dropbox and it is installed on my office computer, home computer and on my laptop. If I change a file at the office, the file is immediately uploaded to the Dropbox cloud. Once it hits the cloud, it is downloaded to my home computer and if my laptop is on, it is also downloaded to my laptop. It manages synchronizing all my computers and all I did was put the file into my Dropbox folder.

Even more astonishing, Dropbox manages versions. Lets say I edited our personnel manual and accidentally deleted a section. I can log onto Dropbox.com and review prior versions of the manual and restore an older version if necessary. Dropbox is free for up to 2gb, but the real benefit comes when you buy an annual subscription. 100gb is about $100. Go to dropbox.com.

It's News from TRI

The spider web is one of those things that are great to look at as long as it isn't in your face. It is amazing to think how the spider can navigate these thin lines with speed and grace. I thought it was a great metaphor for the 7 1/2 hours I spent on-line with Microsoft Customer Support this past week in the attempt to resolve an issue that rendered my new Windows 8 computer unusable. I felt helpless as the fly that falls prey to this spider web. Read more below. In This Issue

Microsoft Account (aka Windows Live) Saga

Microsoft has maintained personal information a very longtime. With the development of MSN, Microsoft Passport, Microsoft Yes, this is NSA headquartersWallet, Windows Live and XBox Live, Microsoft has created a database the size of the NSA. Well maybe not. But it is big. Now with the addition of Windows 8, your Microsoft Live account stores your Windows preferences. Things that you used to set for each computer can now be automatic and synchronized between all your Windows 8 computers. Sounds great, doesn't it? Your favorite web sites, Smartdrive file sharing, your Windows themes, your background picture and even your Ribbon Menu customized settings. Sounds fabulous.

Until something goes wrong. What could possibly go wrong. Well it is computer software and sometimes there are bugs. This is the beginning of my saga this past week. I have a new Windows 8 computer for home where I do a lot of my work with photographs, web sites, file management, and work with the Sterling Historical Society. My new computer was awesome until I attempted to make a change the Ribbon options in File Explorer (new name for Windows Explorer). Windows File Explorer crashed and never ran again. That is, never when I was signed on to my computer with my Windows Account sign in. The one that I have had since 1997? Yes that one.

So on-line I went to Microsoft Online Support. A service known as the Answer Desk. This is a pay-by-occurrence service which costs $99 for Premium Software Support. We are told to take a closer look. "Get expert help", "Complete PC Diagnostics", Dedicated Attention", "...make sure your software issues are resolved". Sounded great. I spent the $99. My Microsoft Account knew immediately which credit card to charge.

To make a long story somewhat shorter, I spent 7 1/2 hours over 3 days trying to resolve the problem. I permitted them to take over my computer. I removed all my files and software (a process that takes me 8-12 hours to install). I performed a clean refresh of Windows, I reinstalled Windows. I Reformatted my drive and started from scratch. And my results were the same in all cases. If I signed on using my Microsoft Account, I could not run Windows File Explorer. So to get a refund on my $99, I must invest more time and contact Microsoft by phone, 800-642-7676. We will see if they pay my invoice for $1,125.

The problem in a nutshell: Microsoft provides no way of editing specific personal preferences, program settings and general settings that they store in the cloud. You can, in theory, remove ALL personal preferences (here) but they will tell you that they may not be deleted immediately. "Until the next scheduled clean-up". I will follow up with a blog post with an update should this problem ever get resolved.

My immediate solution is to set up a local user for my Windows 8 computers, give up Skydrive and other features of shared preferences.

Windows 8

I have been using Windows 8 for some time. I use it on a touch screen desktop PC, a Windows Surface Tablet and a multi-Windows8screen desktop PC. I do not use it in the office! I do not have XBox 360. I do not have a Windows phone. So my level of understanding a screen swipe is limited to an iPhone, iTouch and iPad.

That said, I do have a general sense of where Microsoft is going with Windows 8 and I certainly have my opinion. Here it is. Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a cover. At first, the cover is pretty to look at but hides Windows 7. At first, the cover lets you do things you might do on a mobile or a tablet or XBox. Like watch Netflix, see the latest DOW or what Bing has to tell us. But where is Windows 7. Well its right there. Click Windows button and D and Enter and there it is, your old desktop. Ahhhh, that feels better. But where is my Start button? Well sorry, Microsoft thought it best to remove your primary method of moving from application to application. Yes, that shows a degree of brilliance. We will call that Microsoft Bright! And we will define it by saying that Microsoft has an arrogance that is only slightly diminished by our friends at Apple.

So what does a business user do to make his life a little easier? He uses the task bar. That little bar at the bottom of the screen that contains icons or folders that you use all the time. If you like, you can use your desktop just like before to paste shortcuts of programs or files as you see fit. The point is that nothing has really changed all that much.

But, if you have a Windows phone, or a Microsoft Surface, then the new cover is at your disposal. So don't be too upset. If you need a hand, please let us know.

Social

Subscription Software

So what is a company to do when 35% of their revenue slips through the hands of pirates? Stop selling it altogether. Really? Yes, this is the trend we see in Microsoft and now Adobe. We see it in anti-virus software like Trend Micro and news publications like Time Magazine. As you know, we have been a proponent of Office 365 for a while now. It is inexpensive and provides the latest available software. We also see other companies following suit. Autodesk, Azimio, IBM, Intuit, and others.

Adobe provides their complete array of design tools for $50 per month per user which supports up to two computers. Not as attractive as Microsoft, but workable for those of us that require at least 3 or 4 Adobe products.

Will we no longer be able to obtain software in a box? I am sure we will. At least for a while. But this is yet another example of how the Internet is taking over the way we do business.

Keep in mind subscription software is different from SaaS (Software as a service). SaaS is a software that runs in the cloud like Quick Books Online, Microsoft Office Web Apps or TRI's Ordertrack services. So expect to see more and more subscription software.
