Bostons Big Dig

The black swan is a creature rare and beautiful. The swan symbolizes bonding and love of course, but also spreading our wings and taking flight. In our dreams a white swan is considered cleansing, even purifying. The black swan indicates deep mysteries within us and a longing to express ourselves creatively. I like to think of the black swan as a symbol for taking a different road, the road less travelled, yet remain steadfast on the power of long lasting relationships.

Jobs Coming to America?

It seems that the hourly wages in China have more than doubled in the last 5 years. It also seems that marine fuel prices have almost tripled in the last 2 years. So what does this mean? It means that even with our hourly wages here in America, when you adjust for the increased productivity and better distribution, it is becoming attractive to bring jobs back to America. It may not be a trend that is sweeping the nation, but if companies look closely at the costs of manufacturing in China and compare that to alternatives here in the States, there is a distinct possibility that manufacturing may return.

Time magazine (October 10, 2011) spolights Jarden Corp., Rye, New York. This company may not ring a bell, but it took over the ailing likes of Sunbeam, and Coleman. Jarden looks very closely at manufacturing costs and adjusts accordingly. If, in the big picture, it saves money to bring manufacturing back to America, it does.

This all makes sense as the world economy begins to balance itself. Good luck America!

A Great Personal iApplication

You don't need an iPhone or an iPad to find this application useful. Pageonce.com is just about the easiest application I have Pageoncefound to create an overview of your financial position. That includes your bank accounts, checking and savings, your credit card accounts, your online payment accounts like PayPal and even your investment accounts. On one screen of your iPhone, it tells you your current available cash from all your accounts, payments that are due, your total debt and the total of your investments. This is your dashboard. Click on your cash and you will see what accounts that cash is in. Click on payments due and it will show you upcoming payments.

It takes a little work to load all your access information, but once entered, it is really easy to use. Some of you may be concerned about security, take a look at the FAQ's that address many of these issues.

Talk About Legacy

A great deal has been said about Steve Jobs since his death. This week, Walter Isaacson gives us an entire book about the man. So why am I Steve Jobsadding my 2-cents? Because as I look around this world for people to admire, I am saddened by the loss of Steve Jobs. In his very short lifetime he conquered, and I mean CONQUERED, computers, music, animation, telephones, tablets and digital publishing. That doesn't even take into account that he was ousted from this company called Apple and came back to make it the most valuable company in the world - not the country, the world.

Was he tenacious, sure. Did he have a big ego, no doubt. Did he make some enemies along the way, I think so. He was a man loved and hated, but intensely admired. What a legacy , what an ocean of imagination he leaves in his wake.

We have a void. Who next will step up to the plate? What will that imagination look like.

The remnants of the Big Dig offer this respite, The Rose Kennedy Greenway, between Boston Harbor and Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Facing towards the North End, this view had been covered by the darkened trestles of the Expressway. The Dig cost about 15 billion dollars. Nice!!

The Magic of Walt Disney

One of the secrets to the magic behind all of Walt Disney's creations is it suspends reality for us all, young and old. Whether it is Magic Kingdomwalking down Mainstreet USA which harkens back a century to the heartland of America with its quaint shops, brick walkways, smiling children, background music playing everywhere you go and street performers in spats and pin stripe jackets. If you have done your research, you will

Having visited Disney dozens of times in the last 25 years, the magic still envelopes my senses with each step. Sit with Goofy in front of Tony's Restaurant, take a ride on the Train to Adventure Land, have a haircut in the Barber Shop, it really doesn't make much difference. If you believe in magic, then it doesn't matter how old you are, Disney will put a smile on your face.

October 1st, Disney World is celebrating 40 years. So it is appropriate that the entire Walt Disney Resort will be joining in with Project XL – 4 days of special events including the best parade in the Magic Kingdom of all time – during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. If you are interested in sharing the celebration magic with those you love, click here.

The TRI Web Site: www.trif.com

TRI has had the domain www.trif.com since 1997. It was one of the last 4-character domain names available, Many people www.trif.comask us what does trif stand for, so I thought I would tell you. You can read my blog article on it written back in November of 2010, What is a TRIF.

But really, when TRI started in 1982, our primary business was publishing freight rate tariffs for trucking companies in New England and, in fact, the country. We also published guiding tariffs for rules and mileage with the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission). A SCAC (standard carrier alpha code) code is required to publish tariffs and our SCAC is TRIF.

So you might still find on file with the DOT (the Department of Transportation took over the duties of the ICC which was dismantled in the 1990's) our Mileage tariff ICC TRIF 105 and our classification and rules tariff ICC TRIF 100.

We have spent a great deal of time working on the content for our web site and soon we will be giving it a completely new face. Stay tuned. When you have a moment, take a look at our fresh new content at trif.com.

Being Open Hearted

Warren Grossman suggested that being open-hearted is a means of personal conduct that is learnable, natural, and cost-free. Here is how to open your heart: Sit or stand quietly and pat your chest so you can feel the sensations of your chest. Lay both of your hands on your chest. Close your eyes and pay attention to the sensations. When you lose track of these feelings, stop and move around a bit.  Your task is to feel the sensations of your chest. There is no correct length of time to practice--a minute or two is plenty at first. Struggling to endure will not help. Never do this unless you want to. Never do it when you are tired, angry, or frightened.

If you perform this practice several times a day, you will soon experience physical and emotional benefits. You will feel calm, quiet, and optimistic. It will become a favorite thing for you to do.

Kristin Neff wrote a book on Self Compassion (Stop beating yourself up and leave insecurity behind) and suggests that compassion should begin within yourself and then you can share it with those around you. Opening your heart is the beginning.

Technology Asset Management

For quite a while, we have dealt with keeping track of systems, software, users and security in a variety of ways.  It has plagued us because it can get really complicated.  But we needed some place to keep this information that was secure, complete, centralized and easy to navigate.  Well there wasn't one packaged software program that handled the problem so we did what we ask our clients to do.  Ask for what you need.

We sat down one day in an informal meeting and brainstormed what we need to keep track of and how all the pieces of information are inter-related.  We came up with a comprehensive asset management data structure that handles our dilemma without being overly complicated.  Basically, there are three components; assets, software and users. There are a variety of attributes for each like brand, model, memory, disk size, and more for asset.  We have brand, version, licenses, date purchased, and more for software.  And for users, we have name, email, username, password and more.

Now that we have a system, compiling the data is a reachable task.  At last.

Let us know if you need something similar.

Monitor Electric Usage

They say knowing is half the battle.  Well our electric bill has

always been a sore point.  Spending more than $4,000 a year

TED5000

on electricity has always disturbed me.  I just didn't get it.  Then I came upon this little device - the TED5000 - that connects up to your incoming power and reports your real-time usage. It comes with a little hand held remote that displays current kilowatt usage. With it, you can stroll around your home or office shutting things off or turning them on and instantly see the impact the appliance or device has on your meter.

If that wasn't enough, it includes its own little web server that provides a slick dashboard  that reports current usage, projected monthly usage and if you load utility rates, your to date charges.  All this for under $400.  I bet it will pay for itself in less than 6 months.

For more information on TED - The Energy Detective, click here .

Your Own Lightning Photos

Ever wonder how they get those great pictures of lightning?

Patience, right?  Not likely. Here is a device that connects to

Lightning

your camera and is an extremely sensitive optical flash sensor responds to lightning flashes and releases the shutter of your camera at just the right moment.   Make sure you follow the instructions and stay at least 6 miles (30 seconds away) just to be safe.

OK, so you will want to take pictures of lightning pretty badly to spend $329 for this device.  Click the picture for more information.
