News - News from TRI

There are two places in the world I have seen dollar bills covering almost every inch of wall and ceiling. The first, Cabbage Key, an island in Pine Island Sound near Useppa Island not far from Ft. Myers, FL. Stop there for lunch and you will see walls covered with a purported $70,000 in one dollar bills. The second is pictured here. Willie T's on Duval Street in Key West, FL. Ask for a marker and a stapler and add your own history. It only costs a dollar!

How are You Using Your ERP System?

Wikipedia will tell you that ERP provides an integrated view of core business processes, often in real-time, using a common databases maintained by a database management system. ERP systems track business resources; cash, raw materials, production capacity; and the status of business commitments: orders, purchase orders, and payroll. The applications that make up the system share data across the various departments (operations, purchasing, sales, accounting, etc.) that provide the data. ERP facilitates information flow between all business functions, and manages connections to outside stakeholders.

All too often, ERP Systems are used for operations and billing, but fall short in offering business intelligence, customer relations management, resource planning or analysis.

Think about the information that goes into your ERP system and how you can make use of or enhance that information to better communicate and manage staff, vendors and customers, contain costs, market your strong and profitable strengths and cut out your losses.

Think about real time profitability tracking and sales forecasting. Consider possible service improvements and customer satisfaction programs. Add new and valuable information that will help you evaluate things that work vs. things that don't. Think out of the box when it comes to collaboration and cooperation between members of your team. Enhance your use of your ERP system elevating it to a single integrated application all team members to use for customer and vendor management, operations, service, collaboration, review and analysis.

A Fresh Look at Apple vs. Google War

In technology-time, the mobile smart phone war has been brewing for eons. Apple had a head start, but Goggle and the Android operating system made incredible strides and overtook Apple in market share. That said, Apple revenue is still ahead of Google. Way ahead! Apple has revenues of 40 to 50 billion per quarter. Google hovers around $15 Billion.

Google has a market cap of 378 Billion as compared to Apple's 565 Billion.

In the end, the war is fought in the field by passionate users who love their device. I lean towards the intuitive design of Apple mobile devices although I recognize the benefits and attraction to Android.

It isn't really an issue any more because every important App is available for either device and it is the Apps that provide the real value. Without the Apps, they are just phones and similarly functional.

Time to move on to other technology fronts, this war is over.

Adjusting Focus After You Shoot?

The Lytro Illum is a Light Field Camera, What is that? It is a camera that has a sensor that captures the color, intensity and direction of the light rays flowing into the camera. It allows you to change the focus of your photo AFTER you take the picture. That means you can modify the subject of the photo after the photo is shot. Change the focus from forefront to background and you see a completely different picture. See a video of what this means here. It is extraordinary.

Sporting a uniform F/2.0 and a 30-250mm zoom the options are framing and that's about it. Until after you shoot the picture.

Per Lytro, "During image capture an interactive depth feedback display shows the relative focus of all objects in the frame, allowing composition in three dimensions. A real-time color-coded overlay of the live view lets you know which elements of the picture are within the re-focusable range."

They continue: "The Lytro desktop tools also give you the ability to transform pictures into dynamic animations that can be experienced on desktop, mobile devices and in 3D. That means every nuance, dimension and emotion as envisioned and authored by the photographer"

I am not so sure about this. It is a paradigm shift, a new way of thinking. Today, we take a picture focusing on what we think the subject should be. Tomorrow, we will just take the picture and decide later what the subject really was. It is hard to wrap your head around what the new process will be like. Where is the art?

The Illum will be available in late August, but can be pre-ordered now. Have a look for yourself. It is really very cool.

New News - News from TRI

Earlier this month, I was so fortunate to have visited lower Antelope Canyon just outside Page, Arizona. If you search the web, you will see thousands of pictures like the above. It is impossible to take bad photographs in this wonderland of multicolored sandstone weathered by water over thousands of years. The canyon is on Navajo land and a $50 photographers pass is required for visitors like me carrying an SLR and tripod. Do you know how many pictures you can take in the allotted 2-hour trek through the canyon? Not enough! The picture above was taken in mid-afternoon light. Amazing!

Sedona - Before the Fires

Courthouse Butte Rock, pictured here, was just one of the breathtaking sites to be found during my visit to Sedona, Arizona. Oak Creek Canyon on the north side of Sedona is now under siege by fire with more than 20 thousand acres burning. The fire is said to be 45% contained and there is some optimism but the damage has been devastating.

The fire is under investigation, but it is thought to have been man-made. It is easy to imagine how easy a fire would start and spread considering Sedona is extremely dry and has less than 2 inches of rain between April and July. We had that much rain just this past week.

So I was lucky to have visited Oak Creek Canyon and Slide Rock and traveled Highway 89 north before these fires began. The area will certainly have a different look for years to come.

I was able to take thousands of pictures during my visit with hikes at the foot of Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Rock and in the valley overlooking Chimney Rock and Airport Mesa. It is hard to describe the feeling when you witness the awesome and breathtaking beauty of these natural monuments of nature especially at sunrise and sunset. It was a powerful and meditative experience. i will repeat.

Google Glass

Well, we just received our pair of Google Glass(es) to allow us to develop Apps for the new device. We haven't yet donned the pair in public, but have certainly tested them in our office. In essence, Google Glass is a computer capable of listening to your voice, respond to your commands, take pictures, record videos, link to your mobile phone or wi-fi hotspot, browse the Internet, share your experiences with FaceBook, Google+ or Twitter in real-time and feel the touch of your finger along the stealth touch-pad just in front of your ear.

With just over 100 Apps available, Google is hungry for developers to create new and wondrous real-world applications. We can see the potential for sensible applications in logistics especially when it comes to the inspection of goods, step by step driving directions, immediate speech translation, hands-free communication. There is even an App for long-haul drivers that will wake you up if Google Glass senses you are falling asleep.

We can imagine an App that provides real-time traffic warnings, surveillance applications or enhanced driver trip logs

Google faces a major hurdle. Price. Google Glass retails for around 7 times what it cost to make - not accounting for research and development costs. Retail price tag $1,500.

We Have Moved

It has been a busy month! After 14 years, we have left the retail plaza in Sterling and moved back to the office space we had used between 1988 and 1997. We are now back at the corner of School Street and Waushacum Avenue just around the corner from the Sterling Fire House at 9 Waushacum Avenue in the downtown historic district of Sterling, Massachusetts.

We have spent the last 10 months renovating the structure from top to bottom. Our new office is larger, brighter, energy efficient and very peaceful.

It gives us large offices, a great conference and meeting room, kitchen with lunch space along with computer room and library.

The building which we purchased in 1988 was originally constructed in 1840 and was showing its age. We used Maynard based ACH Construction to handle the rehab and were delighted with the results. The professionalism, workmanship and attention to detail was beyond our expectations.

With the help of Bogen Electric and Super Mario Plumbing and Heating, our new offices are ready for action. If you have an opportunity, please visit us at our new facility.

Newstuff - News from TRI

Escaping to New York City this past weekend to get some away time and see a couple spectacular Broadway shows, I was looking forward to getting my camera into St. Patrick's Cathedral for Easter Mass. I hadn't realized that the cathedral was in the middle of a 3-year, $177 million restoration project inside and out. The collection of scaffolds and ladders produced a network that would have pleased Michaelangelo. Me.... Not so much.

Now Presenting... Background Music

Finding music to use as a background for a slide show, presentation or video is risky at best. Using copy written music without paying appropriate royalties is a recipe for disaster. But there are solutions available. Istock photo has been providing royalty free music for some time, but it isn't cheap. A three minute track can cost $50 or more. Incompetech.com has a wide selection of free music. Sure you can make a donation, and should. It is your choice. Select music by genre or by feel, that's right, by feel. Aggressive, epic, eerie, somber, uplifting, and many more emotional triggers.

Consider making your own movies using PowerPoint. Add a music soundtrack at the beginning of a presentation and click play through all slides, set the transition with an automatic effect and set the timing between slides at two to five seconds as you see fit and save the PowerPoint as a video file. That's all there is to it.

Sure you can use Microsoft Movie Maker for a few more bells and whistles, or go all out and use Adobe Premier or Apple Final Cut Pro, but it really isn't necessary to make a simple presentation. Here is an example of what I mean. This is a photographic portfolio I put together in PowerPoint, it is less than 3 minutes and makes my point. The pictures are all mine, but the music comes from incomptech.

Microsoft Office for the iPad - Close

OK, It took a really long time, but Microsoft has finally acquiesced, recognizing that Apple has a superior tablet that is here to stay. Office Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word are now all available for the iPad.

I have been using Outlook for a while and find it sluggish, but it will give me all my mail whereas the default Apple IOS mail client is limited to 1 month at most.

PowerPoint for iPad is a stripped down version of the powerful Windows presentation application so it is really only appropriate for showing ppt files which isn't really necessary since the Apple App Keynote will happily show PowerPoint presentations.

Excel does have some potential as does Word. These application seem robust enough to work with existing spreadsheets or word documents.

In the end, you will find that a laptop will serve you better in the long run for creating Office documents, but these Apps will permit you a very portable viewing option.

Microsoft OneNote

I thought I had reviewed Microsoft OneNote before but it seems I have not. Shame on me! Microsoft OneNote is a quiet little powerhouse of an application. Think of it as an incredible personal assistant organizing every aspect of your life. Office 365 users have this application at your fingertips.

So what is it? It is an enormous file cabinet, the contents of which are safely synchronized to the cloud and accessible using your office desktop, home desktop, laptop, Windows or MAC, iPad or iPhone.

The file cabinet is filled with Notebooks containing colored folders, the tabs of which are displayed for quick access. Within the folders are pages, subpages and sub-subpages. Within a page can be a year's worth of emails, contract documents or memos, links to web references, attached spreadsheet, a Visio diagram, screen-shots, pictures, recorded audio notes and even video clips.

It works with scanners, news readers, livescribe smartpens, Office Lens, OneNote Clipper, Feedly and more! Share a Notebook with employees, collaborators or partners. Mutually make modifications to folders or pages and OneNote will not only synchronize those changes but maintain a history of revisions as well.

Integrate Outlook with OneNote and you are able to link between a calendar item, like a meeting, to the notes you took in that meeting. Once the connection is made, synchronization between OneNote and Outlook allows you to flip back and forth between event and the notes for the event. A great use is to email OneNote pages directly from OneNote to participants of a meeting.

OneNote is one of those tools that is so powerful, most users will only use a tiny sliver. Let us know if you would like to really implement OneNote. At a minimum, take some time and watch some Youtube videos.

News from TRI

Logan International Airport. In the distance, you can make out the water tower on Faunbar Avenue in Winthrop. Years ago, when I worked in Winthrop, my favorite time of all was when I had lunch from Belle Isle Seafood. They have moved since I was there. Thankfully, just a few hundred yards away to a new location on Main Street, Maybe because an unknowing stranger to town would have driven right past their shack, never venturing inside. This photo was taken from the observation deck of the Boston Custom House leased by the Marriott Vacation Club.

A Peek at Pulp and Paper

Decades ago, the Lower Merrimack Valley was a large producer of Paper products. Today, Erving, Haverhill, Holyoke, Hyde Park, Lee and Turners Falls appear to be the last Pulp TruckPaper and Pulp Mills in Massachusetts although many towns continue to have paper processing mills. Much of the Paper manufacturing has moved to Canada. Pictured here is a truckload of Pulp being delivered to a Saint John Paper Manufacturer, Irving Paper, in 2013. The plant is near the Reversing Falls in Saint John.

A by-product of paper manufacturing is sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide (both responsible for acid rain) and carbon dioxide. Sulphur dioxide causes breathing disorders. Looking at Asthma rates in Massachusetts, it is interesting if not catastrophic that the percentage of Asthma in children in communities with paper mills exceeds the national average by as much as 300%.

View 2007-2008 Massachusetts Asthma Rates

It is also interesting to note that the CBC reported that Irving Paper in Saint John was cited 4 years in a row for exceeding the allowed emissions of 3,000 tons per year by almost 500 tons each year.

Also noteworthy is that conventional paper bleaching using chlorine produces dioxins which are highly toxic. Dioxins accumulate in the food chain in the fatty tissues of animals. 90% of human exposure is found in meat, dairy, fish and shellfish. It is because of this that in the 1990's the use of chlorine in the bleaching process was strictly controlled.

What is the NSA Up To?

According to CNet and The Intercept report that the NSA has crafted an automated system to hack millions of computers. The NSA operation named Turbine created implants which infect computers via fake Facebook web pages and spam emails. Once infected, the computers microphone could be commandeered to listen to conversations near the computer or take over the computers webcam and snap pictures. Although it was designed to attack system administrators at foreign internet service providers, it isn't clear how extensive a reach is actually taking place.

The NSA reports that the NSA does not use its technical capabilities to target global internet services without appropriate legal authority. It seems that over the past 10 years, the NSA has recruited new hackers and developed new malware tools extending its reach to tens of thousands of computers.

It is interesting to note that Symantec and McAfee are quiet about NSA malware. However Kaspersky, Panda and Trend Micro have confirmed detection of state sponsored malware. They also claim not to have received a request to not detect malware. If asked by a government agency, they advised they would not comply believing there is no such thing as harmless malware. All of this prompted Mark Zuckerberg to call President Obama to complain about the NSA.

The NSA is one of 15 "black" or classified agencies with a total annual budget of around $75 billion dollars. It is presumed the budget are discussed in secret session by the appropriations and intelligence committees of Congress.

Introducing Wickr

Provide a free and easy way for anyone to communicate securely while giving them the ability to Leave No Trace.

Wickr is a text messaging App with the addition of major encryption protocols, transport security and security key exchange. Once the message key is used, it is destroyed. Wickr's servers do not posses decryption keys, so they cannot access your messages and Wickr destroys all attachment metadata. So in the end, Wickr knows very little about you and your contacts and nothing about your messages. Private messages are extraordinarily difficult if not impossible for anyone to read except the intended recipient. This is not the case with standard text messaging (SMS). Standard text messages are stored on servers in clear text for anyone to read.

Some security experts have said that Wickr's proprietary algorithms used to store information on their servers is prone to error. Wickr takes exception to that and has offered $100,000 reward or "bug bounty" for those who find vulnerabilities that significantly impact users.

Businessweek calls the technology Mission Impossible self-destructing messaging. That is because message sent are not stored, never unencrypted while being transported and destroyed after read.

Wickr's mission statement? "Wickr us the World Post Office and will become the most trusted communication system in the world by giving power to the people. Wickr has experienced huge growth since it was revealed that the NSA surveillance program was leaked last year as well as receiving millions in funding. Wickr plans to add voice capabilities in the near future.
