I recently went back to bike riding and try to spend every morning riding for a few miles. The picture above is one of the many picturesque views along one of my routes. The property (for the most part) is owned by the State of Massachusetts and is part of the Poutwater Pond Wildlife Management Area. An area about 378 acres in and around the towns of Sterling, Holden and Princeton. It is part of the 21,028 acres owned by the Department of Conservation and Recreation Division of Water Supply Protection known as the Wachusett Reservoir Watershed. You will see this hill heading north towards Princeton on Mason Road in Holden.

QuickBooks and QuickBooks On-Line

One of the many applications with which we integrate data is QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online. Many of our clients use QuickBooks for their accounting. These same clients use our software for operations and invoicing and QuickBooks for accounts payable, general ledger and financial statements. Some clients enter daily accounts receivable totals into QuickBooks, some prefer to have all their invoices posted to QuickBooks.

We create a link to QuickBooks or QuickBooks OnLine enabling them to post individual transactions and automatically create new customers when necessary. We also provide views into QuickBooks information for special reports, special calculations, plus restricted views to sensitive information. We can relate information from our operational software (like a driver or a salesman) with information in QuickBooks (like an invoice) to provide accounting information relating to that person such as total billing, total amount owing, total cash received, etc. This opens up many possibilities for additional capabilities QuickBooks was not designed to handle.

If you use QuickBooks, think about the things you do manually (that includes using a spreadsheet) because QuickBooks software doesn't handle something particular to your business, consider talking with us about creating a better solution.

What Can a 3-footed Squirrel Teach Us?

SquirrelPlenty! This little guy lost his rear right foot in a battle with something other than me. You would think that would give him pause to cross a 75' cable 20 feet in the air. Nay Nay! He climbs a tree close to the house and onto the roof. He travels the roof peak finding his way to one end of the high-wire and slowly descends onto the wire heading for a caged block of feed intended for Downey woodpeckers and feathered friends.

Why is this newsworthy? Because this squirrel, this 3-footed furry rodent is the only animal who has taken the risk and dared to walk this high-wire originally constructed to thwart black bear, gray squirrel, red squirrel and chip monks. It was this 3-footed demon that even after jumping into space unknown and falling to the ground more than a dozen times who still ventured forth persistent to reach his goal and bent on success. It taught me a lesson in determination and perseverance. Somehow I feel I should reward this mangy animal for conveying these values to me - again. per-se-ver-ance . n. Steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness.

Voice Over IP - VoIP

For a while now, I have been talking to people about the service that we use for hosted telephone, voice and fax. We use 8x8, Inc. It is one of the highest rated voice over IP services available and provides some great features.

They provide telephone service over the Internet. It makes no difference who provides you Internet access, 8x8 will test and determine if your Internet connection is capable of handling voice over IP. With VoIP through 8x8, you are connected with your virtual office no matter where you are. You can run an 8x8 App on your iPhone or iPad and turn it into a phone using WiFi. You can have your office phone ring through to your Mobile. You can Fax from anywhere. You get immediate playable messages emailed to you whenever a message is received.

With all the services you would expect with telephone service you are also provided conference calling, online telephone and computer meetings, video conferencing, call recording, wireless headsets and web access to your virtual office and configuration. There are no big systems to be installed. No PBX. No special wiring. All you need are 8x8 phones connected to the Internet with your standard Cat5 cable just like a computer.

Spring and summer have been so nice even with the hot weather this month, it has been hard not to take advantage of the Central Mass Rail Trails. I took this picture at the entrance to the West Boylston Rail Trail located off Route 140 just south of Sterling and the 190 Interchange. It is about a 4 miles walk along and across the Quinipoxet River. Along the way, visit the self-guided tour of the Springdale Mill Site. The mill was booming a century ago using the river as power and manufacturing woolen cloth.

Sitting on Your Butt Reduces Life Span?

Could that be true?  I am in deep trouble!!  Are you?  It seems that the American Cancer Institute has studied more than 100,000 people and found that if you are a female and sit for more than 6 hours a day, you are 40% more likely (20% for men) to suffer from cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and depression as compared to those who sit for 3 hours or less.  This does not change with the amount of exercise you do when not seated. So what can you do?  Here are some options (click on either to read more on Amazon):

The Treadmill Desk and the The Balance Ball Chair (Also good for improving posture). The best answer?  Move around. A lot! Easier said than done.  Good luck!

   




 

 

 

 

 

Curious about the Browser War?

Results vary. It depends whether you include mobile or not.  There are conflicting reports because the mobile market has impacted the results drastically.  If you include the mobile market with the influx of droid devices, Google Chrome will be on the top of the leader board.  If you omit mobile devices, the figures skew heavily towards Microsoft Internet Explorer with Firefox coming in second and Safari in 3rd place.

It depends on where you live. In the United States, UK, China and Australia Internet Explorer dominates, where as Russia and South America is Google Chrome territory.  Europe and Africa sends Firefox to the top.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter to the consumer.  All the major browsers provide an outstanding experience at a cost of nothing.  The issue comes in developing web sites and applications and have them behave the same on all browsers.  There are many ways to interpret HTML (Hyper-text Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and even more when you add scripting languages.  Writing code for the web is susceptible to a difference in interpretation and that causes unpredictable results.  It is only experience that can glide through these differences unscathed.  For more information, shoot us an email to info@trif.com.

Look It's Buzz

Over the last few weeks, I have spent some time on the waterfront of Boston Harbor. From the North End to South Boston and out in the harbor. There are so many beautiful photos to choose from. How things have changed. It is truly a site for sore eyes. The Boston Harbor Association and the City of Boston have done some wonderful things in the past few years since the big dig was completed. Take some time this summer and see the sites, walk the walks, share the beauty.

Playing with Money

In transportation, there are a lot of ways you can pay drivers, direct deposit and Comcheck are frequently Moneyused by service providers.  In a recent application we developed, dispersing money was a key requirement.  We needed our operations software to tender funds to drivers instantly. We needed to accommodate advances as well as payments and it needed to be done using the services of both Comdata (Comcheck) and our client's bank. 

We handled the challenge by creating software that allowed operations managers to advance funds by electronical bank check through the Automated Clearing House network (ACH) deposited directly into the drivers personal account or by Comdata refilling a fuel card or making a Comcheck advance available.  Our software can issue ACH tenders directly to the bank or read an automatic data feed from Comdata.  The information flow is fast and automatic. 

Most important, all information feeds directly into our operation software and specifically the driver ledgers which maintain all credits and debits applying to each driver. For more information about playing with money, send an email to rmj@trif.com.

 

Boston Harborwalk

It has been years since I spent any time along the waterfront in South Boston especially FanPieraround Northern Avenue.  Decades ago, in a prior life, I worked on the Army Base on Summer Street and ate at Jimmy’s Harborside and Jimbo’s with some frequency.  It was a run-down area with refrigerated trucks racing up and down the beat up cobblestone road.  The Army Base is gone or transformed I should say (now Black Falcon Cruise Terminal and the Boston Design Center) and the whole area is now a wonderful attraction. From Fan Pier to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and on to Castle Island -- it is yet another shining star of Boston.

The Harborwalk of Boston, with nearly 39 miles of public access walkways (now open) is a beautiful place to spend the sunny days of summer.  Eventually, 47 miles will be open to the public from Deer Island to East Boston, around Charlestown, Downtown Boston and on to South Boston and Dorchester. Filled with parks, pavilions, boardwalks, docks, shopping, cafe's, restaurants, entertainment and a glorious view, it is a wonderful walk. 

Take a 45 minute harbor cruise from Long Wharf and you can be dropped off in Charlestown and walk back or catch the next boat, as you wish.  Enjoy this summer!  Spend some time in Boston. Are Three Monitors Better than One?

I have been working with 3 monitors for almost a year and I can say emphatically YES!. 

If you do monitorsany of these things, consider adding a 2nd or a 3rd monitor to your desktop: multi-task, search for pictures, use email like it was texting or need to reference multiple things at the same time. You will find you print things much less often which is a very good thing.  The mouse slides smoothly from left to the right monitor as if it was a single screen.  Many applications will span monitors as you can see in the picture above. 

A browser window of images will seamlessly stretch across all monitors and allow you to scroll as you normally would.  Windows explorer will also span monitors which is great when you are looking for that one photo you took in the summer of '93.

I warn you, once you go to three monitors, using one for anything other than play becomes almost painful. If you want more information on setting up monitors side-by-side, please let us know.

Microsoft Cloud Services

This month we extended our relationship with Microsoft in support of their cloud services.  The trend these days is moving to the Office365 cloud and computing anywhere we want at any time on any device.  Microsoft On Line Services provides a smooth transition for existing Microsoft Office users to push many functions like email, Calendar, Notes, Task Lists, Documents and the like.  The advantage is that you have the flexibility to select a hybrid of applications in the cloud and those that will stay local to a specific computer.  There are also some organization-wide capabilities such as SharePoint OnLine, Dynamics CRM OnLine, Video Conferencing and Computer Management.

All-in-all, it can be a powerful advantage and at the same time a menagerie that requires some professional insight and planning.  You can scan Microsoft or set up a meeting with us.

The List

TRI has been providing technology services and creating software for 30 years.  We have created hundreds of unique The List applications spanning a wide range of business's.  We thought it was time to start creating a list. So we went through the archives and began to prepare a list of applications we have written, services we provide, software we use,  data formats we know,  data parsing and data exchange we provide and technology we support. 

Click the image at left and look for yourself.  We have really accomplished and developed a great deal over the years.  One of our problems is, we have probably forgotten half of the things we have done. So as we remember, we will update the list.

We hope that this becomes a memory jog for some of you.  You never know how connections are made till you hit on an idea, a thought, a memory.  It is all rather serendipitous.

The Eagle

What word can be used to describe this bird of prey but Majestic.  The American Eagle also known as the American Bald Eagle is Bald Eaglean experience to behold - especially close up.  I shot this picture of this eagle a couple of weeks back about 70 feet up in a scrub pine in the Florida’s Gulf Coast community of Bonita Springs.  It was on watch.  For what, I wasn’t sure.  But I have come to find out that they have binocular vision capable of spotting a rabbit a mile away or a fish in water from 1,000 feet in the air.  They can successfully scan a 3 square mile area if they are perched high enough. Remarkably, they can see while blinking because the membrane that slides over the eye is translucent.   Their eyes project outward and forward and their vision overlaps giving them binocular vision like humans.  However, their retina is far superior to ours.  Combine this sight with a head that can turn 270 degrees and you have a fierce bird of prey.

I felt privileged to look into the eyes and witness this bird in action.  More awesome than Osprey’s that hover and dive, Eagles soar in the clouds and swoop when they see something of interest.

Look It's Buzz

I wanted to spend a little time on the arts this month because it is a hobby of mine. Art comes into play on the job everyday whether it is preparing presentations, creating new forms, writing the newsletter or blog articles, contemplating changes to the web site or planning a new video. What better way to symbolize art than travel to the imagination of Disney and take a ride on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. My high score is 128,000 by the way. Hope you enjoy.

Documents Attached to Emails?

How often do you need to deal with a document that is attached to an email? We have a number of clients that have this occur many times a day. Many of them print it, scan it and attach it to a transaction in our software often throwing the print out away after scanning. Some wanted more.

For those, we have added the ability to automate the processing of these attachments. We have given them a special email address to use for forwarding these emails with attachments. They forward the email changing nothing but the subject, for that they type the transaction number associated to that document. Not a second after sending this email, the attached documents get split apart from the email and connected to that transaction. A window will then pop-up allowing the user to further mark those documents with a type (selected from a list) and a description if one is required.

Now the document is permanently connected to the transaction and can be used anytime in the future to email, fax, print, include with billing, display on a web tracking screen or merely save for future reference. The document could be a purchase order, permit, photograph, proof of delivery, contract, or any other document that needs saving. Next time you get an email with an attachment, think about how we might help you build a better way to handle it.

What is in a Logo Anyway?

This past weekend using my favorite iPad App SketchClub, I digitally sketched rock columns with an eagle flying above the highest peak. After I was done, I thought it would be a Logo Sketchgreat place for our logo to fly as well. It made me think about logo's in general and what they can mean. So what does your logo say about your company? Interesting question which spurs different ideas in different people. To me, our logo symbolizes a great deal.

Although we have been in business for 30 years, our logo is only a few years old. I guess it took us 25 years to figure out what we stood for. Well, we certainly know that now and our logo has a lot to say.

For example, it is bird like flying, upwards which symbolizes soaring flight and being able to see the forest for the trees. It is sleek which implies that we are quick and be able to maneuver swiftly. If you look closely, you will see three dots, eyes if you will. These represent the three distinct specialties we combine into one company; design, development and support. Our logo also symbolizes movement. That is where we concentrate our resources; movement. It is the movement of people and things that takes up most of our attention. Where is that driver, where is that trailer, where is that carton, we build systems to know the answers to these questions and understand all the necessary components of why, when and how much. So when you look at our logo, I hope you see more now than before. What does your logo say?

Why is Sleep So Important?

There is some evidence that sleep is our time for problem solving. Regardless of the arena, emotional, relationship, job or money, sleep will improve your Sleepchances of solving a problem. However, it is REM sleep that allows your brain to ferret out solutions. REM sleep usually kicks in about 90 minutes after you fall asleep.

During REM sleep, your brain kicks into high-gear and begins to multitask. Instead of conscious awareness and focusing on one subject at a time (like we try to do when we are awake), the brain in REM sleep goes into overdrive. It allows random images and thoughts to flow in fleeting bursts of free association. They travel in a bidirectional stream between your left and right brain. When you are awake, it is a one way street. In REM, ideas flow freely left to right, right to left. This is how creativity comes into play in seeking out solutions.

The brain will also concentrate on those problems that have the greatest impact during waking hours in an attempt to resolve your biggest problems. The key to problem solving and creativity is uninterrupted sleep and lots of it. Good luck! You can read more about this in Time Magazines April 23rd issue.

One of my visits to western Florida, I always marveled at the contrast between the sky and the palms. They are beautiful leaves flowing and gentle. They are used to thatch roofs because they are so waterproof when layered. This is the edge of a thatched roof and goes along with the theme of one of the articles this month. Protection of applications is not only found in protecting data but also connectivity.

Murphy's Law

Recently, one of our web applications was thwarted by a Verizon switch gone bad. It occurred on a Friday night and we didn't become aware until Monday morning. The entire weekend was lost because one computer in the cloud could not communicate with another computer at a client site. 

Besides the loss in productivity over the weekend, it took more than 2 hours to ferret through the various possible organizations that might have been causing the issue. So even though there is fault tolerant computers, the connection was not fault tolerant. It proves the adage of Murphy's Law, if something can go wrong, it will go wrong. 

In the past we monitored our mission critical servers. We have now implemented enterprise wide monitoring looking at every server in our network or our clients network that is providing data remotely or via a web interface. If one of our client's computers goes down, we will know about it. If one of our clients loses Internet, we will know about it. In this world of many cooks in the kitchen, knowing is half the battle. If you would like more information, shoot us an email!

 

iPad3 - What's All The Hoopla?

So what is all the hype about the iPad 3. Oh my God!!!  Where do I begin? Let's start with the fact that you can't see pixels anymore. With a resolution of 2048x1536, it is far better than many computers with 21" monitors. That's better than most HDTV's! 44% better! Since there are four times more pixels in the same real estate, the picture is truly razor sharp. This isn't just Hype. This is real. It is phenomenal!

It is amazingly sharp. Apple calls this a Retina display which means they claim that it matches what the eye can see. In other words, it looks realistically clear. Well it does. Drawing programs take 4 times as long. If you were painting on a 12" x 12" canvas, your canvas is now 24" x 24". Viewing pictures was great with the iPad2, but much better now. It is really significant! 

To go along with the new resolution is a better camera. A 5-megapixle camera takes near perfect pictures and also HD Video! The clarity and detail is really quite excellent. Although it is a bit awkward taking pictures or movies with the iPad, they have made it a bit easier by relocating the shoot button. Next, the iPad3 supports 4g. This might be more noticeable with Verizon service than AT&T because of the abysmal scope of AT&T's 4g network. Although not discussed, I have noticed that the screen is more responsive to my touch than the iPad2. This may be due to the new A5X chip in the iPad3. 

Lastly, the iPad3 takes dictation. I have tried it and it is quite good.

Wireless Bandwidth

With the onslaught of iPhones, iPads, smartphones and tablets, wireless bandwidth supplies are being threatened. Just like all our natural resources, the gluttony of our insatiable appetites is beginning to max out available wireless bandwidth. The Congress of the United States has actually taken some action and approved the auctioning of frequencies owned by television stations. Although it is not a requirement for broadcasters to sell their frequencies. But it is an opportunity which many will exercise.

As part of the legislation, the sale of these frequencies will fund the establishment of a public safety network police and fire have been begging for since 9/11. Also in the cards is the development of a Super Wi-Fi network with increased capabilities which will most likely gobbled up by Google and Microsoft.

We may begin to reap the benefits as soon as next year.
