News from TRI and Robert McKay Jones

I took this photo at the Lincoln Memorial in DC. I was awed by Washington, DC. It is a great place to visit to begin to get a sense of our roots and our founders and the great people that preceded us. In this grand election month, I contemplated how it once was. How dedicated, devoted and passionate people were to have lead our country through remarkably difficult times. It is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Where are the Lincoln's of our age? Where is Mr. Smith? It was Lincoln who said, "It is not merely for today, but for all time to come that we should perpetuate for our children's children this great and free government, which we have enjoyed all our lives".

Microsoft, B&N and the Surface

So what is Microsoft looking to accomplish sinking 300 million dollars into Barnes & Noble? That represents almost 18% of B&N. Well, it creates a new entity; Nook Media LLC. B&N is now an able contender in the battle with Amazon. Nook Media includes the digital and college businesses of B&N and is backed by the technological, legal and financial mite of Microsoft. Beyond that, it really isn't clear. But Amazon and Goggle will take some notice.

One thing that has been promised is a Nook powered by Microsoft Windows 8. Will that differ from the new Microsoft Surface Machine generated alternative text: Tablet? That brings up another topic, the Microsoft Surface Tablet.

First looks at the Surface hosts a 10.6" widescreen display, a highly rated case with keyboard built in, a flip out stand, and more weight than the iPad4. It is bundled with a version of Windows 8 (named Windows RT) and will be a pain to try and get legacy software to run on it. It operates a bit like a laptop but has the feel of a tablet, so it is really a good mix. Initial tests find it lagging in performance, so buyer beware.

All this said, what you do get with the Surface is Windows behind the Xboxy interface. That includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. OK, it doesn't support Visual Basic for Applications, so it limits our ability to create Office Apps for the Surface. Ouch! But I suspect that will be forthcoming.

Sometime in the 1st quarter of 2013, Microsoft is expected to release the Surface with Windows 8 Pro. A 2 pound monster tablet. Roughly the same dimensions but a whopping 1920x1080 resolution display, 128gb optional storage, USB Ports, micro SDXC card and video out port. This one has me on the edge of my seat!

Cloud Services with Office 365

If we haven't already spoken to you about Microsoft Office 365, we will soon. We have been installing the Cloud-based version Machine generated alternative text: j Microsoft i.Off ice 365of Office for many of our clients. We have had some great success and are about to begin unleashing some of the power behind Office 365 and Sharepoint and Exchange. The suite which has moved into the cloud offers extraordinary flexibility, productivity and freedom. The mobility is really what has impressed me.

Colin Powell's 13 Rules

I am half-way through Colin Powells' book "It Worked For Me". It is a positive book with many lessons and some great advice. Powell substantiates every piece of advice with an anecdote going way back to his childhood in the Bronx.

It is uplifting because he was never an outstanding student. He wasn't great at sports. What he had was a great deal of common sense and amazing instincts. Who knew that his love all through the years he was in the limelight was repairing old Volvo's. I guess everyone needs a passion and why would rebuilding vintage Volvo's not qualify?

I enjoyed his candor and also respected his choice to stay away from the financial institutions that sought him out after his departure from the Bush administration. I also respect him for leaving the Bush administration when it was clear to him that the President no longer desired his advice.

Powell gives us his 13 Rules in the first Chapter and gives us near full-disclosure to support them. I share them with you in the hopes you might also read his book and learn why each of these rules holds importance for him and why they may hold some importance for you.

The 13 Rules

  1. It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
  2. Get mad, then get over it.
  3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that, when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
  4. It can be done!
  5. Be careful what you choose. You may get it.
  6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
  7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours.
  8. Check small things.
  9. Share credit.
  10. Remain calm. Be kind.
  11. Have a vision. Be demanding.
  12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers.
  13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.

TRI News from trif.com and Robert McKay Jones

This is a photo taken in Cabo San Lucas at sunrise at the southern most point of Baja California. Cabo lies at the same latitude as Hawaii. On the easterly side of these mountains lies Lover's Beach where the water is warm and calm. Just a stroll through an opening in the mountain to the Pacific side is Divorce Beach, known for its deathly undertow and large crashing waves. Cabo is the port of call for more than 400 cruise ships every year. It is here where I go to get away. I am here now.

The Art of Software

Every once in a while, I think about why we do what we do - create software that is. It's hard work, takes extraordinary patience, Struggletaxes our creative psyche and requires an inordinate amount of concentration. It is similar to an athlete finding the strength, will and determination to attain extraordinary height, speed or distance. It is often an ongoing uphill struggle that requires the endurance and cooperation of all those that are touched by the project.

So why do it?

For a couple reasons that have nothing at all to do with computers or technology. Reasons that have driven us for 30 years and continue to drive us still. Simply put, we need to create and collaborate. Like an artist paints a canvas, like a teacher guides a class, like a community leader rallies support, we have a desire to craft something and a need to partner with those that will benefit from what together we create.

It isn't just a liking. It is a devotion, a calling, a passion. It is why we persist, why we stay the course to the end. And it is not our end we seek, it is the end sought by those we serve. Often a moving target, often never to be reached. We hang on and endure hoping to paint a painting never before seen so that it might be enjoyed by those with whom we have collaborated for so long - our friends. When we reach that goal, when we have finished the painting, we beam with pride and fulfillment. Please let us know if you would like to help us create our next painting.

iPhone 5

With 2 million iPhone 5's sold in the first 24 hours of launch, it isn't surprising that there is a great deal of hype, twittering and hoopla surrounding this new formidable device. Yes, thankfully you can still have a phone conversation with the iPhone 5. But alas, there is much more to it. Here is the short list:

- It is lighter than the 4 (lighter than any iPhone ever)

- It is thinner than the 4

- Glass strips on top and bottom protect the antenna signal

- Larger 4" display, 1136x640 pixel resolution for a true widescreen feel

- Louder stereo speakers with better quality

- Improved processor for faster response

- Improved video stabilization

- Upgraded front camera improving FaceTime conversations

- Fast panorama mode photography

- Also, Apple maps replaces Google maps. This has gotten a lot of bad press, but at first glance, I really like the improvement. 3D maps are very cool and the TomTom routing worked well in my tests.

But is it worth switching from the iPhone 4s now? Not really. The new iOS 6 provides all the new software features available in the iPhone 5, so it is the thinner sleek look and feel and larger display that are driving the move to the 5. I will await the rumored iPad Mini or the Microsoft Surface Tablet.

Internet Television is a Contender!

I am not looking to necessarily replace Comcast or give my DVD player the heave-ho, but this little device gives them a real run for the money. For around $50 one-time purchase price and an Internet connection and a TV, you get an incredible feature rich media server. Roku is a great streaming player and certainly the most popular. What does that mean? It will act as a hub for Internet TV and Video streaming connecting your Internet connection to your TV. There are countless, literally countless stations available – enough to please any interest. There are the standards like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, TED, Disney, CNBC, NBC News, Fox News, Showtime, etc. There is also the ability to link your Roku with your Facebook, Flickr, Pandora, Picasa, Vimeo or Shutterfly.

Then there are the less popular channels. For example, I enjoy Koi TV which provides content from Oregon State University on the care of Koi fish. Mitt Romney might enjoy the Mormon Channel. If you are into Yoga, there are a number of Yoga channels providing free instruction. Pilates is also available.

Travel to worlds you have yet to discover. Nepal TV takes you to Nepal. TelAfric will take you to Africa. Maybe you are interested in Argentina. If so, ViaArgentina is for you. Don't worry if you are interested in the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Malaysia, Korea, Honduras, Italy or Germany, there is a station for you as well.

Sports, endless options exist. Video Podcasts? Yes,Roku is a real contender in providing streaming video. Have a look.

TRI News from trif.com and Robert McKay Jones

This picture was taken in our back yard where we try to plant flowers that attract these lovely creatures. Some of those flowers include milkweed, thistles, Japanese Honeysuckle, Ironweed, and Red Clover. This is an Easter Tiger Swallowtail. An interesting fact about the caterpillars of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is they look like bird poop when they first hatch so that they will be mistaken for just that. As they age, they get fat and turn a light shade of green.

Conditional Formatting

Some of you may know and understand Conditional Formatting, but I thought enough of you don't and it just might be helpful. Conditional Formatting is a powerful tool available in Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Access and Outlook. Basically it means you can use 'if- then' logic to ascribe color to things that will enhance your user experience. Here is an example. Let's say that you would like to use the Outlook Calendar as a To Do listing tool, but you want the items to stand out. You can set up a conditional formatting rule that colors any calendar entry that contains the text to do as a bright vibrant color. To do this in Outlook 2010, right click on your calendar and click View Settings, then click on Conditional Formatting.

In Excel, it is even more powerful. You can very quickly view highs and lows or even trends by formatting a column of values with a color scale.
Have a look for yourself and see what you can do with Conditional Formatting. If you need a hand, feel free to get in touch with us.

So what is FitBit?

Were you ever curious how many steps you take in a day? How many flights of stairs you climb? How many miles you walk? Interested in how many calories you burn in a day? Technology, time to step in! FitBit is a device you can wear on your waste, slip in your pocket or drop in your shirt pocket. It keeps track of your every move.

It exchanges data wirelessly with fitbit.com through a USB base connected to your computer. Just get near it (within about 15') and the information is passed to your computer and www.fitbit.com. You can see how you are progressing throughout the day by clicking a little button on the device. It will tell you current counts for steps, calories, miles and floors. It will even track how you sleep, how many times you woke up, how long it took to fall asleep and how much sleep you get.

Sounds remarkable? It really is.

Fitbit also links with popular nutrition and fitness apps like loseit and Microsoft HealthVault. For just under $100, it is a very cool toy that just might help you get in shape and stay there!

Survey This!

Been asked to complete a survey lately? I try to comply when I can, but it does get out of hand. Another lesson I learned from Disney is ask for an opinion after an opinion has been formed but before it is forgotten. So the recent cruise we were on asked for a very specific survey to be completed prior to leaving the ship. It is a very important part of every position on board ship. A good review converts to fame and fortune!

American Express tries to do a good job by sending an email shortly after you have visited their web site, but alas, it is often too late because we have visited 50 more web sites and have forgotten our experience. Frequently you will remember only when the service is so horrible that it makes you stew for hours. Most of the time, you just forget and move on.

The clincher though is Microsoft. Notorious for asking you to complete a survey even before you have clicked your first click on their site. The word annoying was created specifically for this reason. So what does this survey do for the company Microsoft? That's right, it turns us against them. Why? Because it is stupid and we can't stand stupid. Don't upset people by asking them their opinion at the inappropriate time. You may as well not ask!

Considering setting up your own surveys? It just might be worthwhile to let a professional help you with your survey questions and timing before you run out and sign up for Survey Monkey. Have questions, drop us a line.

TRI News from trif.com and Robert McKay Jones

I recently went back to bike riding and try to spend every morning riding for a few miles. The picture above is one of the many picturesque views along one of my routes. The property (for the most part) is owned by the State of Massachusetts and is part of the Poutwater Pond Wildlife Management Area. An area about 378 acres in and around the towns of Sterling, Holden and Princeton. It is part of the 21,028 acres owned by the Department of Conservation and Recreation Division of Water Supply Protection known as the Wachusett Reservoir Watershed. You will see this hill heading north towards Princeton on Mason Road in Holden.

QuickBooks and QuickBooks On-Line

One of the many applications with which we integrate data is QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online. Many of our clients use QuickBooks for their accounting. These same clients use our software for operations and invoicing and QuickBooks for accounts payable, general ledger and financial statements. Some clients enter daily accounts receivable totals into QuickBooks, some prefer to have all their invoices posted to QuickBooks.

We create a link to QuickBooks or QuickBooks OnLine enabling them to post individual transactions and automatically create new customers when necessary. We also provide views into QuickBooks information for special reports, special calculations, plus restricted views to sensitive information. We can relate information from our operational software (like a driver or a salesman) with information in QuickBooks (like an invoice) to provide accounting information relating to that person such as total billing, total amount owing, total cash received, etc. This opens up many possibilities for additional capabilities QuickBooks was not designed to handle.

If you use QuickBooks, think about the things you do manually (that includes using a spreadsheet) because QuickBooks software doesn't handle something particular to your business, consider talking with us about creating a better solution.

What Can a 3-footed Squirrel Teach Us?

SquirrelPlenty! This little guy lost his rear right foot in a battle with something other than me. You would think that would give him pause to cross a 75' cable 20 feet in the air. Nay Nay! He climbs a tree close to the house and onto the roof. He travels the roof peak finding his way to one end of the high-wire and slowly descends onto the wire heading for a caged block of feed intended for Downey woodpeckers and feathered friends.

Why is this newsworthy? Because this squirrel, this 3-footed furry rodent is the only animal who has taken the risk and dared to walk this high-wire originally constructed to thwart black bear, gray squirrel, red squirrel and chip monks. It was this 3-footed demon that even after jumping into space unknown and falling to the ground more than a dozen times who still ventured forth persistent to reach his goal and bent on success. It taught me a lesson in determination and perseverance. Somehow I feel I should reward this mangy animal for conveying these values to me - again. per-se-ver-ance . n. Steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness.

Spring and summer have been so nice even with the hot weather this month, it has been hard not to take advantage of the Central Mass Rail Trails. I took this picture at the entrance to the West Boylston Rail Trail located off Route 140 just south of Sterling and the 190 Interchange. It is about a 4 miles walk along and across the Quinipoxet River. Along the way, visit the self-guided tour of the Springdale Mill Site. The mill was booming a century ago using the river as power and manufacturing woolen cloth.

Sitting on Your Butt Reduces Life Span?

Could that be true?  I am in deep trouble!!  Are you?  It seems that the American Cancer Institute has studied more than 100,000 people and found that if you are a female and sit for more than 6 hours a day, you are 40% more likely (20% for men) to suffer from cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and depression as compared to those who sit for 3 hours or less.  This does not change with the amount of exercise you do when not seated. So what can you do?  Here are some options (click on either to read more on Amazon):

The Treadmill Desk and the The Balance Ball Chair (Also good for improving posture). The best answer?  Move around. A lot! Easier said than done.  Good luck!

Curious about the Browser War?

Results vary. It depends whether you include mobile or not.  There are conflicting reports because the mobile market has impacted the results drastically.  If you include the mobile market with the influx of droid devices, Google Chrome will be on the top of the leader board.  If you omit mobile devices, the figures skew heavily towards Microsoft Internet Explorer with Firefox coming in second and Safari in 3rd place.

It depends on where you live. In the United States, UK, China and Australia Internet Explorer dominates, where as Russia and South America is Google Chrome territory.  Europe and Africa sends Firefox to the top.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter to the consumer.  All the major browsers provide an outstanding experience at a cost of nothing.  The issue comes in developing web sites and applications and have them behave the same on all browsers.  There are many ways to interpret HTML (Hyper-text Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and even more when you add scripting languages.  Writing code for the web is susceptible to a difference in interpretation and that causes unpredictable results.  It is only experience that can glide through these differences unscathed.  For more information, shoot us an email to info@trif.com.

Data Integration - Import and Export

Something we do every day, often many times a day, is create applications that pull data from a source and push it to a destination. We call this data parsing which means that we parse or strip out the data we need from the source. We might use custom software to handle this on a regular basis or we might create the capability for a one-shot transfer for a very specific requirement.  It is good for you to know what the possibilities are so that you can consider how a program might improve productivity, efficiency and accuracy.

So here are some of the places we parse or strip data from and to;

  • PDF files
  • Text files
  • Excel files
  • Doc Files
  • Access table
  • SQL table
  • email
  • email attachment
  • XML (eXtended Markup Language) files
  • EDI files (Electronic Data Interchange)
  • API (application programming interface)
  • Web pages - HTML
  • Web applications (Hubspot)
  • CRM Software (Act, Dynamics CRM, Sugar, SaleForce)
  • Payroll service (ADP)
  • Accounting systems (Peachtree, QuickBooks, MS Dynamics)
  • Communications systems (Qualcomm, Actsoft)
  • Mileage systems (PC Miler, Rand McNally)

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in integrating data into your application.

News from trif.com and Robert McKay Jones

Look It's Buzz

Over the last few weeks, I have spent some time on the waterfront of Boston Harbor. From the North End to South Boston and out in the harbor. There are so many beautiful photos to choose from. How things have changed. It is truly a site for sore eyes. The Boston Harbor Association and the City of Boston have done some wonderful things in the past few years since the big dig was completed. Take some time this summer and see the sites, walk the walks, share the beauty.

Playing with Money

In transportation, there are a lot of ways you can pay drivers, direct deposit and Comcheck are frequently Moneyused by service providers.  In a recent application we developed, dispersing money was a key requirement.  We needed our operations software to tender funds to drivers instantly. We needed to accommodate advances as well as payments and it needed to be done using the services of both Comdata (Comcheck) and our client's bank.

We handled the challenge by creating software that allowed operations managers to advance funds by electronical bank check through the Automated Clearing House network (ACH) deposited directly into the drivers personal account or by Comdata refilling a fuel card or making a Comcheck advance available.  Our software can issue ACH tenders directly to the bank or read an automatic data feed from Comdata.  The information flow is fast and automatic.

Most important, all information feeds directly into our operation software and specifically the driver ledgers which maintain all credits and debits applying to each driver. For more information about playing with money, send an email to rmj@trif.com.

Boston Harborwalk

It has been years since I spent any time along the waterfront in South Boston especially FanPieraround Northern Avenue.  Decades ago, in a prior life, I worked on the Army Base on Summer Street and ate at Jimmy’s Harborside and Jimbo’s with some frequency.  It was a run-down area with refrigerated trucks racing up and down the beat up cobblestone road.  The Army Base is gone or transformed I should say (now Black Falcon Cruise Terminal and the Boston Design Center) and the whole area is now a wonderful attraction. From Fan Pier to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and on to Castle Island -- it is yet another shining star of Boston.

The Harborwalk of Boston, with nearly 39 miles of public access walkways (now open) is a beautiful place to spend the sunny days of summer.  Eventually, 47 miles will be open to the public from Deer Island to East Boston, around Charlestown, Downtown Boston and on to South Boston and Dorchester. Filled with parks, pavilions, boardwalks, docks, shopping, cafe's, restaurants, entertainment and a glorious view, it is a wonderful walk.

Take a 45 minute harbor cruise from Long Wharf and you can be dropped off in Charlestown and walk back or catch the next boat, as you wish.  Enjoy this summer!  Spend some time in Boston. It is honestly one of the very best cities in America. For more information, here are a couple of links of interest for the Boston Harbor Walk and The Boston Harbor Association. Have fun!

Are Three Monitors Better than One?

I have been working with 3 monitors for almost a year and I can say emphatically YES!.

If you do monitorsany of these things, consider adding a 2nd or a 3rd monitor to your desktop: multi-task, search for pictures, use email like it was texting or need to reference multiple things at the same time. You will find you print things much less often which is a very good thing.  The mouse slides smoothly from left to the right monitor as if it was a single screen.  Many applications will span monitors as you can see in the picture above.

A browser window of images will seamlessly stretch across all monitors and allow you to scroll as you normally would.  Windows explorer will also span monitors which is great when you are looking for that one photo you took in the summer of '93.

I warn you, once you go to three monitors, using one for anything other than play becomes almost painful. If you want more information on setting up monitors side-by-side, please let us know.
